Even though Apple has given its nod to third party development for iPhone and iTouch it seems Sun Microsystems dream of porting Java ME JVM to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch devices would not be as smooth as it was being predicted. The first glitch is with regards to the clause in the license agreement:
An Application may not itself install or launch other executable code by any means, including without limitation through the use of a plug-in architecture, calling other frameworks, other APIs or otherwise. No interpreted code may be downloaded and used in an Application except for code that is interpreted and run by Apple's Published APIs and built-in interpreter(s).
After this legal limitation here is another glitch in the form of technical limitation since as per Apple only a single iPhone application can be run at one point of time and no other third party iPhone application will be allowed to run in the background. Even though it cannot be termed as a technical limitation in strictest terms as iPhone runs the same kernel as Mac OS X, it could be more of a ploy to limit the consumption of RAM by third party background processes but from the previous situations it looks unlikely that Apple would give Sun such privilege. In case such a situation arises Sun would like to talk to Apple but will Steve Jobs be interested? Let's see!!

For the previous entries in this series, see here, here, here and here. Reminder: for purposes of explanation in the exercise of deriving grade rules, we’re using the CS151-50 (opensource). I’ve linked to it enough times in the previous entries so you should have it by now.
The first thing I did was to sort out the measures most likely to be needed for the average bodice and bottom. This spreadsheet can be found here in the forum. For this exercise, we’ll cover the girth portion of tops, leaving length grades for tomorrow. In the girth portion of the spread sheet (screenshot below), we have chest girth, waist girth, neck base girth, armscye circumference and upper arm girth.

Perhaps the screenshot looks a bit confusing; it’s set up to be used by a grader. The base size is 5 which means that the grading value for 5 is zero because you’re going up and down from there. The sizes to the right of 5 are indicated with a “+” sign. This means you’re adding these amounts to the base size of 5. The opposite is true of the smaller sizes to the left of 5. With me so far? For the purposes of clarity, the discussion will refer to examples of making the pattern larger. The text becomes too complicated if I have to constantly refer back and forth to smaller or larger.

Air for Linux alpha version is out now. Those of you who have been following Adobe closely, this is a cross operating system application runtime enabling developers to use Ajax, HTML, CSS, Flash and Flex for extending rich internet applications to desktop. There is no need for coming up with additional platform specific code and it offers access to branded desktop applications which before were only available to Windows and Mac users.
Since it's the alpha version you won't find all the features and as of now you can download the pre release alpha version from here. By the end of the year expect the complete version to be out and that too in other languages besides English. See full article.

iPhone has caught the fancy of developers since the time it has been launched and here comes alcheMo beta for iPhone. Aimed at Java ME and iPhone development, it is fully automated and can port Java ME mobile game to iPhone and iPod touch minus any form of manual adjustments.
Now with alcheMo one can develop high performance native iPhone games in Java and benefit from its multi touch features and accelerometer. It implements optimizing translator for converting Java ME application source code to application source code for iPhone. I believe all you Apple iPhone fans out there need to test it for sure.
