Jam entrepreneur invited to prestigious TV awards.
But five years on and teenager Fraser Doherty revealed how his jam business is close to making its first million after sealing his latest deal with a major supermarket. And the enterprising 19-year-old will be celebrating by rubbing shoulders with the stars at the prestigious Britain”s Best Awards at the weekend. For Fraser, of Davidson”s Mains, it is all a far cry from when he first began making his ‘Super Jams’ at home and selling them door-to-door.Made using his grandmother”s recipe, his jams use super-foods like blueberries and ginger for their ingredients, but with grape juice instead of sugar to make them extra healthy.Morrisons, Tesco and Waitrose are already stocking Fraser”s jam, with Asda becoming the latest big name to sign up, and the incredible success has seen the former Royal High pupil give up on a business degree to work full-time at his company. The hard work is certainly paying off, with his nomination for the glittering awards seeing him join celebrities from the worlds of TV, film and sport at a gala televised event in London. The youngster, who has been put forward for the New Talent Award, is taking it all in his stride however, and admitted he was looking forward to meeting his competitors more than the celebrities.’I heard a few weeks ago and it is quite exciting, although really I”m just amazed at the company I”ll be in,’ he said.’It will be nice to be at a big celebrity party, and I”ll be taking a few friends down, but mainly I”m looking forward to meeting the other finalists.’The business is going really well, and it”s just continuing to grow.

S Kumars acquires Scottish fashion chain.
Internacionale”s sister company Au Naturale, a homeware retailer, was sold to Elaine McPherson, a Scottish entrepreneur and founder of the fashion chain MK One.

The problems facing Internacionale and Au Naturale were said to be associated with a slump in high street spending in Britain, arising from the global credit crunch, as well as mismanagement.

The two companies were said to have collapsed amid a cash flow crisis, in which they had been unable to meet many of their rent and service charge obligations for their outlets.

Graham Martin, one of three men appointed joint administrators of Internacionale Ltd, which owned and operated both Internacionale and Au Naturale, said in early May the company had suffered financial difficulties for the past nine months.

Papped at premier with Ross Kemp!

Papped at premier with Ross Kemp!.
So when one of my friends, TV entrepreneur Charley Parsons, invited me to London to the premiere of Never Forget – the new musical about the unlikeliest of Take That tribute bands – I jumped at the chance.

My partner Michael was also invited, but he was too busy running our companies. So I had to go alone.

On the train journey down, I was looking through my mobile phone to see who I could invite to walk down the red carpet with me.

My first text was to my comedy friend Alan Carr, who replied: ‘Would love to but I”m in Menorca. “Back for good” at the weekend, he he!’

A few others I spoke to were also busy, so I turned up to the Savoy Theatre alone. But I wasn”t on my own for long.

As soon as I set foot on the red carpet, I heard someone shout my name.

US Labor Department Summit Sets Stage for Disability Employment

June 23rd, 2008

US Labor Department Summit Sets Stage for Disability Employment.
In addition to workshops, Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Neil Romano and decorated disabled veteran and entrepreneur Dawn Halfaker made presentations. Halfaker discussed her transition from the combat zone to civilian life and described her experiences as the chief executive officer of Halfaker and Associates, a small business.

Tomorrow”s featured events are stakeholder meetings, where employers, government agencies, university officials and interest groups will discuss how to expand access to the talent pool of workers with disabilities.

‘People with disabilities are a great, largely untapped resource for our nation,’ said Romano. ‘This summit brings together the national leaders of business, academia, the government and interest groups to continue progress toward people being hired and promoted based upon their abilities, not their disabilities.’

Variety-Seekers Most Likely Entrepreneurs, But Seldom Strike It

June 23rd, 2008

Variety-Seekers Most Likely Entrepreneurs, But Seldom Strike It.
But prospective entrepreneurs need to know they”ll probably watch their incomes drop as a result, says a researcher from the University of Toronto”s Rotman School of Management.

‘Too many entrepreneurs don”t make any money on this,’ says Thomas Astebro, a professor of strategy and entrepreneurship at Rotman. ‘In fact, they lose money on average.’

Astebro”s comments are based on findings in a paper he wrote on entrepreneurs with colleague Peter Thompson of Florida International University. The two researchers found that people who have worked in a variety of jobs or industries are the most likely entrepreneurs. Yet some of those very factors also mean an entrepreneur is less likely to succeed, both financially and in commercializing their inventions.

Nordic welcome for wage-bill service

June 22nd, 2008

Nordic welcome for wage-bill service.
Mr Veijalainen, the founder of 3 Step IT Group Oy and Finnish Entrepreneur Of The Year in 2007, will launch the Nordic Wageroller services together with another successful Finnish entrepreneur, Pasi Vre. He has extensive experience in the banking and business finance sectors.

Mr Veijalainen said: ‘We recognised there is a huge demand and long-term potential for the service in the Nordic countries and have worked hard to win the licences to be an exclusive Wageroller provider. Implementation has already begun and we are looking forward to begin taking on customers later this year.’

The Wageroller service provides funding, typically unsecured, to businesses by financing gross payroll for up to two months at a time.

Its innovative structure sees the funding delivered directly to employee”s bank accounts as well as directly to the tax collector, rather than directly to the customer”s company account.
